Burbank Chiropractor Answers Frequently Asked Questions

Burbank Chiropractor in Office answering frequently asked questions about chiropractic

For years, our Burbank Chiropractor, Doctor Simian, has been treating patients just like you. Using Chiropracitc, our Chiropractor takes an approach that focuses on the underlying issues that cause the pain and discomfort you are experiencing. Doctor Simian has an emphasis in Sports Injury, Auto Accident, and Pain Relief/Treatment. Many of our patients around Burbank have questions before their first visit. The purpose of this article is to make sure you have a place you can get some general questions that chiropractors are commonly asked. Don't worry, you aren't the only one!

Q: Why is there a popping sound when a joint is adjusted?

The popping sound sometimes occurs when a chiropractor performs a spinal manipulation or adjustment. The same sound occurs when you “crack” your knuckles, which involves a release of a gas bubble and change of pressure within the joints. There is generally minimal, if any discomfort.

Q: Is chiropractic treatment ongoing?

The frequency and duration of chiropractic care is based on whether the care being sought out is for an acute injury, chronic condition, and/or preventative care. Based on the history and physical examination, your chiropractor can more accurately explain your care plan in how long and how often he/she would need to see you.

Q: How is a chiropractic adjustment performed?

Chiropractic adjustment or manipulation is a manual procedure that is a combination of refined skills developed in chiropractic school. A chiropractor may use their hands, or even an instrument, to manipulate joints of the body to help restore motion and joint function. Benefits of spinal manipulation include decreasing pain, decreasing inflammation, and helping to restore motion and mobility within the joints to name a few. A chiropractic adjustment generally does not cause discomfort and is controlled to meet the specific needs of each individual patient.

Q: What conditions do chiropractors treat?

Chiropractors can treat patients of all ages and are considered neuromusculoskeletal doctors. This means that they can help treat nerve problems and musculoskeletal issues which include muscle, ligament, and joint injuries. Any one of these particular injuries can impact other areas of the body and refer pain to different regions. Chiropractic care can help improve nervous system function and also help restore stability and structure. Chiropractors can also counsel patients on diet, nutrition, ergonomic counseling, exercise, and lifestyle modification. Your chiropractor can also help assist in athletic injuries such as helping improve mobility in and around joints along with functional training.

Q: Is chiropractic treatment safe?

Chiropractic is a drug-free, non-invasive form of medicine that helps with neuromusculoskeletal conditions. No health treatment is completely free of potential side effects and the risks with chiropractic care are very small. Many patients feel some type of relief following chiropractic care, but might also experience mild soreness, stiffness, and achiness just as they do after performing exercise. When the joints in your body are misaligned, the surrounding musculature will conform to this new faulty position, so once the joints are realigned and spinal health is restored, the muscles around the area might want to stiffen up due to them getting back into the normalized position again. The stiffness generally subsides within the first few days after getting an adjustment. Communicating with your doctor and giving a thorough health history can help reduce the risks of any serious side effects as your chiropractor will now know what to be careful of.

“Some reports have associated high-velocity upper neck manipulation with a certain rare kind of stroke, or vertebral artery dissection. However, evidence suggests that this type of arterial injury often takes place spontaneously in patients who have pre-existing arterial disease. These dissections have been associated with everyday activities such as turning the head while driving, swimming, or having a shampoo in a hair salon. Patients with this condition may experience neck pain and headache that leads them to seek professional care—often at the office of a doctor of chiropractic or family physician—but that care is not the cause of the injury. The best evidence indicates that the incidence of artery injuries associated with high-velocity upper neck manipulation is extremely rare—about one to three cases in 100,000 patients who get treated with a course of care. This is similar to the incidence of this type of stroke among the general population.”
